Death Note, first published in Weekly Shōnen Jump issue #13 on August 23, 1999, centers on Death Note, a notebook that, when its owner writes his/her victims' name in it, they are diagnosed with a unique terminal illness and die within a predetermined period of time.[39][40][41] The Death Note is written by a boy known as Light Yagami, a high school student who leads an inadequate life.[42] One day, he finds the Death Note after his father chooses the culprit death at the real world, while Light writes the name of Death Note's true owner Ryuk, and causes Ryuk's death.[43][44][45] Ryuk bargains with Light to reveal his identity, but Light decides to ignore him because he wants to save the lives of the victims of the Death Note before they die.[46][47][48] By using the Death Note, Light starts a series of serial killing and takes on the persona of a self-proclaimed \"superhero\" named Kira.[49][50][51][52]
The Death Note is eventually discovered by the government agency L Crime Investigation Department (CID) while Light is being questioned regarding his acts. CID director, Shinichi Gondo, arranges Light's meeting with the organization's rookie detective, Tōru Mochizuki, a man who is fascinated by Kira.[53] Gondo sets up a deal between Light and the FBI, who ask him to use the Death Note to turn his potential crimes into wild killings, to help destroy Kira as a potential terrorist threat.[54] Light takes advantage of this offer, leaving the CID a file with records of his killings over the past six months.[55][56][57][58] The FBI welcomes Light to their team of agents as he becomes a secret agent.[59]
A film adaptation of the Death Note manga debuted in Japan on October 6, 2006, and was released in North America on August 16, 2007.[37] Given the film's critical and commercial failures in Japan, the film was never released in DVD or VHS in the United States, although it did receive a DVD release in Japanese.[38] d2c66b5586
