Associated with the study type, we will use a multilevel modified intention to treat analysis. The primary outcome of interest is mood status, according to the diagnostic criteria of the American Psychiatric Association (DSM-IV). A priori, we expect that the efficacy of the intervention will be related to the targeted population, as the group of individuals who are using social media for self-medication purposes is expected to have better functional outcomes and fewer externalising and internalising problems than those who are not, because of the benefits associated with this type of intervention. Additionally, we will investigate the effectiveness of the intervention among other subgroups, including gender, drug use, and other mental disorders.
If the quantity and quality of the evidence are deemed sufficient, these systematic reviews will provide valuable information regarding the likely public health impact of the proposed interventions and will inform future researchers on the effectiveness of such interventions in community settings.
The objectives of this study are to determine the effectiveness of social media and the internet for the promotion of the knowledge and attitudes regarding mental disorders (DAKAM-R) as well as for promotion of social functioning (SOFAS), reduction of social isolation (ISI-12) and reduction of externalising and internalising problems (YSR and CBCL) for adolescents, young adults, and older adults. For this purpose we will conduct meta-analyses (using random- and fixed- effect models) and narrative review of all randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews of the literature.
We will identify relevant studies by searching the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, EMBASE and Web of Science databases using the key terms "social media" OR "internet" AND "mental disorders". In addition to the above database searches, the reference lists of all identified relevant reviews and meta-analyses will be manually searched, and contacted authors will be contacted to access other relevant studies. There will be no restrictions on language of publication; however, we will exclude studies identified as having no actual/comparable active control group. d2c66b5586
