Pride often implies self-sufficiency, and vanity self-distrust. Pride is an expression of power, and of a consciousness of strength; but vanity is a sign of weakness, and of a consciousness of want of power.

One feels a certain pleasure in the consciousness of virtue, however imperfectly performed. Pride in a good action is sweet, and is felt by a man, who may be vain of his virtues, perhaps not at all. But he may not have the self-complacent consciousness, which is vanity, and the pleasure which is a gratification of pride, a pleasure of the sort of which one does not complain.

But vanity is not always pride. A proud man may not be vain, and a vain man may not be proud. Pride may be latent in him, but vanity may not be manifest. A man may be proud of his goodness without being vain of it, and a man may be vain of his goodness without being proud of it. A man may be proud of a certain degree of good conduct, without being vain of it, and a man may be vain of a certain degree of good conduct, without being proud of it.
