\"Ip Man 2\" is a reminder of the pleasure of classic martial-arts films in which skilled athletes performed many of their own stunts. In its direct and sincere approach, it's a rebuke to the frenzied editing that reduces so many recent action movies into incomprehensible confusion. I'm not saying deceiving camera angles and crafty stunt work aren't involved in the fight scenes here, but basically we see fighters in real time and space. That enormously increases the impact.
I learn from online experts on this art form that Sammo Hung, who portrays the master of the Hong Kong martial-arts syndicate, is himself a famous choreographer of these films, and that in fact, he filmed his big scene here not long after having heart surgery. Sometimes the story behind a movie is the best one.
Ip confronts Hung, who blames him for the recent events since he refused to pay, while Ip criticizes Hung's management of his students and subservience to the foreigners. Hung insists that he is doing what he must and decides to finish off his earlier duel with Ip. Hung's son suddenly appears during this encounter, and Ip stops Hung from accidentally kicking the boy, while also suggesting that he prioritize spending time with his family over settling their dispute. Ip's wise counsel earns him Hung's respect. Ip leaves, and the next day, Hung gives him and his students free tickets to a martial arts exhibition arranged by Wallace and Fatso.
Sammo Hung was announced as part of the cast in April 2009. Apart from serving as the film's martial arts choreographer, Hung appears as Hung Chun-nam,[9][12] a master of the southern Chinese martial art of Hung Ga.[7] In August 2009, it was announced that Huang Xiaoming would be playing Wong Leung, a supporting character based on Wong Shun Leung, one of Ip Man's disciples and the person responsible for mentoring Bruce Lee.[1] Former child star Ashton Chen was also announced to be playing a disciple.[9] Veteran actor Kent Cheng also has a supporting role in the film.[13] To Yu-hang, who had a supporting role in the first film, appears in the sequel as a different character named Cheng Wai-kei. Cheng is a gang leader practicing Hung Ga, who decides to exact revenge on Wong after Wong defeats Cheng in a fight.[14] Wilson Yip commented on the casting of the veteran actors as being \"a form of tribute to old school kungfu movies.\"[15]
Analysts also predicted that Mandarin Films' hopes of having the sequel gross over 300 million in China was unlikely, due to competition with other films such as Iron Man 2.[42] Another factor was that the illegal recording, downloading and file sharing of the film would cause a potential loss in revenue.[43] A pirated version was released online, one week after the film's release in China, and attracted more than 10 million online users.[44] Raymond Wong publicly expressed that he would be pursuing legal action against the originator of the illegal downloads.[43]
Singaporean film critic Genevieve Loh of Channel NewsAsia wrote, \"Ip Man 2 delivers. Perhaps not as action-packed with dignified choreography as showcased by its excellent predecessor, this installment is nonetheless still exciting, if a tad one-dimensional.\"[48] James Marsh of Twitch Film praised the film, writing, \"Ip Man 2 looks fantastic and does a grand job of evoking the period authentically, lending the film a much-appreciated sense of dramatic gravitas.\"[49] Joy Fang, a critic for online news portal AsiaOne wrote, \"While not as big a movie as the first one, which focuses on heartbreaking and intense issues arising from the Japanese occupation in China, this film evokes Chinese pride with its strong cultural roots.\"[50] Ho Yi, of the Taipei Times wrote, \"Despite its plot holes, the Ip Man series has potential and recalls the 1990s' Once Upon a Time in China franchise starring Jet Li.\"[51] Amir Hafizi of The Malay Mail praised Sammo Hung's martial arts choreography: \"With fluid movements intricate interplay between contrasting martial styles and gorgeous sequences, kung fu fans will definitely get their eye-balls' worth here as this time around, the introduction of Western boxing into the mix makes for some interesting choreography.\"[52] Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times awarded Ip Man 2 three stars out of four, writing, \"In its direct and sincere approach, it's a rebuke to the frenzied editing that reduces so many recent action movies into incomprehensible confusion.\"[53]
Darcy Paquet of Screen Daily had mixed opinions of the film. He wrote that the film's performances and fight sequences \"should ensure decent theatrical runs.\" Paquet concluded his review by writing, \"Ultimately, the film's energy and humour overcome cartoonishly bad performances from the British actors and an utter lack of surprises in the final two reels.\"[54] Amanda Foo of The UrbanWire awarded the film two stars out of five, writing in her review, \"It's no surprise that Donnie Yen isn't willing to sign up for any more Ip Man movies, with the shameless repetition that is happening in these films, even the most ardent fan would be tired.\"[55] Matt Prigge of Metro New York stated in 2016, \"There are gobs of films about Ip Man [...] Of these, the three films starring Donnie Yen are the trashiest; the second one is basically a remake of Rocky IV.\"[56]
In Hong Kong, he became a stuntman before martial arts choreographer Yuen Woo Ping discovered him and cast him as a villain in his 1996 movie Tai Chi II, starring Jacky Wu Jing and Christy Chung, said E!.
Sony plans to launch its ambitious PlayStation 3 Home environment - announced at GDC last week - this October, and expects the initial free download to weigh in at \"under 500MB\", with subsequent patches \"hopefully\" integrated via a streaming solution \"that makes them negligible\".
In the meantime, expect Sony to sort out all the lucrative things its partners will be interested in. Advertising will apparently be kept to \"palatable\" levels, but will be prevalent, while content auctions, downloadable content sales, premium events and all sorts of other initiatives are on the way. \"If you consider Home to be a simulacra of the real world then most goods and services found within the real world could theoretically be replicated within Home,\" the PDF notes.
Prediction: Content control through copyright-protection technology dominates. In 2020, strict content controls are in place thanks to the efforts of legislatures, courts, the technology industry, and media companies. Those who use copyrighted materials are automatically billed by content owners, and Internet service providers automatically notify authorities when they identify clients who try to subvert this system. Protestors rarely prevail when they make claims that this interferes with free speech and stifles innovation.
There will be a point where the music/entertainment industries will have to stop beating up on college kids with minimal access to legal protection and go after adults and others who recognize their tactics are draconian. As more young people who move into adulthood their assumption of free access to music/entertainment will become the norm and begin to be reinforced in legislation and policy.
You can see the trend now where major labels are starting DRM free downloads. I see this continuing. If this prediction does come through, then I see a techi rebellion that could be damaging to the network itself. Bottom line is the there will always be ways to get around DRM, and the hacker community will continue to work ways around DRM and IT systems.
People will stop using systems that enforce restrictive DRM. The current trend (Amazon MP3 downloads, for example) points towards an overall loosening of DRM and allowing consumers to use their goods in more reasonable ways. This will especially be important to consumers as they come to have more and more different machines (iPods, computers, phones) on which they want to use the same files.
People will always find a way to keep the Internet free. In that light, there will be protections on intellectual property, but not exactly restrictions, as long as people continue to expand their use of the Internet for sharing ideas.
Experience to-date indicates a growing leakage of content away from DRM management. My hope is that the cost/effort of maintaining control becomes too expensive for the rate-of-return and that content creators derive greater benefit from more open access. Even a hybrid of some free access with more options for a fee seems more likely than complete control.
The Internet, and Web 2.0, thrives shareware, collaboration, and other information-sharing tools that would be inhibited by such copyrighting. This is violation of free speech and stifles the spirit driving the growth and development of intellectual property.
Unless software dramatically improves, this will not be possible. It is currently very hard to tell which computer touches which picture, sound clip, or movie on the main Web. While this may be possible from cable sites (NBC, CBS, Fox, Discovery, etc.) for most places it will be impossible to track.
The individual and aggregate time, creativity, and mental power of the masses who desire the maximum of fast and free information will swamp corporate and legal efforts.Compensation for intangible products will have to be achieved by some sort of uniform tax or other allocated charge.
Information, creative products, and intellectual property are destined to be free. Monopolistic attempts will fail. Methods for micropayments will increase availability to those who can afford it and much more adequately remunerate producers while liberating information to those who cannot afford to pay.
The benefits of free information on our economy and the general well being of society will greatly outweigh any rights to proprietary information. Companies who own copyrights will be forced to find a system to monetize their content while promoting its free flow through the Internet (i.e. product placement for embedded ads, etc.). 153554b96e
