Like two sprinters leaving the rest of the field behind, the United States and China are neck-and-neck in total medals at the Summer Olympics in Beijing. The U.S. leads the host country 82-79 in total medals. But China leads the U.S. in gold medals, 45-26. Russia is running a distant third with 45 total medals.
Softball star Crystl Bustos swatted a three-run, ninth-inning home run against Japan to send the U.S. softball team into the gold medal game. The final score was 4-1. The Americans have a 22-game winning streak. Also in softball, Australia beat Canada 5-3.
Meanwhile, the U.S. women's field hockey team lost to Spain 3-2, and South Korea beat Japan 2-1. In team handball, France beat Russia 27-24 and Iceland eked past Poland 32-30. Buvaysa Saytiev of Russia won a gold medal in freestyle wrestling.
For the third time, Dutch skaters claimed two medals in a single event. Ireen Wust won silver with a time of 6:54.28 and Carien Kleibeuker bronze (6:55.66), giving Netherlands 21 medals after 10 events. The silver is Wust's fourth medal of the Games, joining gold in the 3,000 and matching second-place finishes in the 1,000 and 1,500.

In singles action, Josie Kuhlman and Brianna Morgan saw their tournament runs end in the semifinal round of the gold draw. No. 1 overall seed Kuhlman fell to Martina Frantova of NC State, 6-3, 6-4. No. 24-ranked Morgan was defeated by Virginia Tech's Illinca Stoica, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0. Spencer Liang fell in a close match to Clemson's Maria Fernanda Navarro of Clemson, 7-6, 6-4. 59ce067264
