This movie is an outstanding and well-written movie with strong female characters, the women are not painted as stereotypical or one-dimensional. The portrayal of their social situations is not only very accurate of South India, but also has important topics for a change like dowry, arranged marriages, devi and maternal homes and women's empowerment.[35]
The film was widely praised for its realistic portrayal of arranged marriages with the scene of the Kargil Gulabi walking out of an arranged marriage in a tank top and the song "Moh Moh Ke Dhaage" portraying the experiences of a girl who does not allow herself to be manipulated by her groom. The movie also highlighted the work of NGOs for the upliftment of women in marriages like the donkeys of Shri Shri Sanshodhan Kendra, or "City of Saint Shri Sanshodhan".[36]
Criticism came from multiple sources. British Board of Film Classification banned the movie in UK for its explicit language, sexually suggestive content (as in "pinky" and "flagrantly sexual touch") and sexual violence against women.[37] The Times of India stated that the movie was "sexist and misogynist".[38] In Australia, the Commissery of Classification office banned the film for its graphic sexual interludes and the portrayal of same-sex love in the song "Moh Moh Ke Dhaage".[39] In November 2005, the film was rated NC-17 by ZDF in Germany.[40] In Switzerland, the film was rated explicit.[41]
Despite the negative press, the movie was a major success commercially.[42] It has the highest opening-day total in Shah Rukh Khan's career so far.[43] The movie was the highest-grossing Indian movie at the Indian box office in almost two years, and the second highest-grossing ever (after Hindi movies like "Ek Rishta Ki Kahani" and "100 Days of Love").[44] The movie went on to gross over.[45]
The movie's soundtrack was composed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, with lyrics by Anand Bakshi and Sanjay Pejunal. The soundtrack also features the songs "Aahe Meri Pehli Pehchaan" performed by Papon and his brother Rishabh Pant, "Moh Moh Ke Dhaage" performed by Varun Grover and Papon, "Chutki" performed by Sonu Nigam, Shilpa Rao, and Rohitash Gaud & Neha Sharma, and "Rajjo Ke Pagal Ho Gaye" which is sung by Alisha Pandit and Shilpa Rao.[34] d2c66b5586
