Leonardo’s passion for animal welfare has also been cultivated through his foundation. He cofounded a nonprofit organization, Save the Elephants, that uses the educational and promotional power of elephants to raise awareness of the elephant crisis in Asia. In 2011, Leonardo started a similar campaign to raise public awareness of the crisis in Africa with the Save the Rhino organization. Leonardo has also campaigned against the trophy hunting of elephants in Africa.

Leonardo has been actively involved with environmental causes since he was a child. Leonardo was a producer on the film and directed one of the two short films it includes. He hopes to make a feature film about the environmental crisis. Leonardo has an honorary M.A. in ecological science from the University of Cambridge and a Ph.D. in history from Stanford.

Leonardo has been making the case for environmental issues in a variety of ways since his childhood. He has now turned his attention to social media, which is becoming a more powerful force in politics. According to HuffPost, the Democratic Party is the party of social media users. Like many of his political peers, Leonardo has been using Facebook and Twitter to connect with his supporters and spread his message to the world. He has been posting his speeches to YouTube and his Facebook page has received around 650,000 likes, with around 2 million people viewing his videos.
