Now, as for whether this actually translates into gamers having any extra money in their purse, we're not entirely sure. After holding the 'free' option for a while, we're guessing people won't bother with it in favour of the Game Pass and cheaper PS Now and Xbox Live options.

There's a tradeoff though. Sony and Microsoft offer more favourable deals that can lead to savings as well as extra game content. Players can also unlock PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold for a year if they spend $100USD or more on either company's services.

As for Nintendo, the new offering appears to be an attempt to disrupt the competitive market and pry into Sony and Microsoft's mouse-and-keyboard sales as well as the game streaming on premium platforms. It's a nice upgrade for retired gamers or those on a budget, and we suspect Nintendo will get some of the Switch adopters (the young and the cord-cutting) it's looking for.

For now though, we're curious just how Nintendo chooses to monetise its offer, and how the free marketing will look. Hopefully this will ease some of the free-game-download jitters we have, as we can't really tell what we'd be getting ourselves into.
