The Long War Studios have already released a Release Candidate for XCOM 2 modding tools. The game's release is just around the corner and they're still working out bugs. They're asking modders to focus on issues that are currently impacting gameplay, and they're also planning on working with modders to release ironclad release dates for new tools as they're ready to go.
“XCOM 2 is a game that lives and breathes its modding community,” said Mitch Gitelman, creative director of The Long War Studios in an interview with ModDB . “We're excited to be one of the three that will be introducing new content to the base game on launch day.”
Firaxis also confirmed that the mod tools will be available in beta for the next three days; if you sign up for the beta now, you can get a free copy of the mod tools when the full release hits on February 5th.
While these three mods already have a release date, they won't be available on day one of the XCOM 2 embargo . The three mods include: DLC, XCOM 2: Uprising, and Uprising.
XCOM 2 is available on Steam right now for $60, but the game will receive an in-game day one expansion on February 5th, and the mod day one release will be a day later. For those who purchase the game, the day one expansion will be included as a free download. Those who have pre-ordered the game at a retailer, however, will receive a Steam gift card valued at $5. The expansion will be available on both PC and Xbox 360.
The new trio of mods includes a Reverse-Engineered campaign, which swaps out the XCOM 2 campaign and replaces it with the original XCOM game; a Rogue expansion that allows players to take control of rival human factions and turn the tide of the war in the XCOM 2 universe; and Militia , which gives players the opportunity to play as a group of human resistance soldiers in XCOM 2.
